Why ‘tasteful’ is a compliment we don’t want

Every client brief eventually uses the word ‘tasteful.’ We’ve started asking what they actually mean by it — and it’s almost always ‘safe.’ Tasteful gets you a nod in a design review. It doesn’t get you remembered on a subway platform.

We’re not against restraint. We’re against restraint used as a hiding place.
